374 triathletes from all over Ireland and beyond were in Fermoy on Saturday, August 16th last to take part in the 7th staging of The Edge sponsored Blackwater Triathlon, which was hosted by the local club.

A huge logistical undertaking, organisers were fortunate to have so many voluntary stewards on duty - all of whom carried out their roles to perfection.

The nerve centre for much of the triathlon was Fermoy Town Park, which once again proved to be an ideal venue. It accommodated the transition area from swimming to cycling and was the finishing point for runners. On their return, participants were treated to substantial amounts of food which helped replenish lost energy.

MC for the triathlon was Tommy Collins who kept everyone up-to-date on what was happening. The first man home in a time of 1 hour and 41 seconds was Chris Mintern (Cork Triathlon Club) - a former winner of the Fermoy event. Carolyn Hayes (Limerick Triathlon Club) was the leading lady. Local man, Rory Sexton from Grange turned in a brilliant performance to finish third overall.

GOOD CROWDS

It was encouraging for all concerned to see so many well wishers lining the route and there were great scenes of celebration at the end as runners passed the finishing line - for elite athletes it was all about recording personal bests, however, for many, completing the course was an achievement in itself.

An Garda Siochana, Fermoy Sub Aqua Club together with members of Phoenix Kayak Club and Blackwater Outdoor Centre, ensured the safety of triathletes and thanks to their expertise, the event was incident free.

It wouldn't be possible to host something on this scale without the support of sponsors and Blackwater Triathlon Club takes this opportunity to publicly acknowledge all those who gave so generously.

With its new 'national series' accreditation, these are good times for the host club and it's a case of upward and onward for the dedicated men and women who give up so much of their time to promote this hugely popular sporting pursuit.
