It was back to the bad old days in Fermoy on Wednesday as the town was subjected to long queues of traffic following an incident that saw the closure of a section of the M8 during Storm Barra on Tuesday.

Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of a single-vehicle incident when a truck overturned on the bridge on the M8 over the Blackwater near Fermoy on Tuesday afternoon. Fermoy Fire Brigade had to cut the cab of the HGV open in order to remove the stricken driver from the vehicle, that was blown over in the strong winds as it crossed the exposed bridge.

“The driver of the truck was taken to Cork University Hospital where his injuries are described as serious but non-life threatening,” a Garda spokesperson confirmed.
