The Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric – Volvo’s first all-electric car – is now available for Irish customers to order. The first fully electric car to be launched by the Swedish company, the XC40 Recharge Pure Electric P8 is capable of travelling more than 400 kms on a single charge, and can be charged to 80% of its battery capacity in as little as 40 minutes using a fast charger.

Inside, the car benefits from the company’s brand-new infotainment system powered by Google Android, and an innovative approach to all-round functionality provides drivers with plenty of storage space.

A MILESTONE IN ONE OF THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY’S BOLDEST ELECTRIFICATION STRATEGIES

Volvo’s first entrant into the compact premium SUV segment when it was launched in 2018, the XC40 has seen unprecedented success, winning a host of prestigious awards – including European Car of the Year in 2018 and Irish Car of the Year 2019.

The XC40 Recharge Pure Electric marks a major milestone in Volvo Cars’ electrification strategy, which is one of the boldest from any traditional car maker. As part of a long-term ambition to be climate-neutral by 2040, the company aims to be fully electric by 2030.

The all-electric XC40 also expands Volvo’s already comprehensive range of plug-in vehicles, sold under the Recharge brand, with customers already able to purchase a plug-in hybrid version of every model in the Volvo range.

While the plug-in hybrid XC40 is ideal for those making the transition to electric driving, the Pure Electric is the perfect car for those ready to commit to all-electric motoring. The XC40 P8’s long range does not come at the expense of performance, with its twin electric motors producing 408hp to deliver a 0-100km/h time of only 4.9 seconds.

INTERIOR DESIGN: MAKING CLEVER EVEN CLEVERER

Inside, an innovative approach to all-round functionality provides drivers with plenty of storage space. The XC40 Recharge P8 offers several large and smartly designed storage compartments in the doors, under the seats and in the trunk. Not having an internal combustion engine means that the car provides drivers with even more storage space, via a so-called ‘frunk’ storage space under the front hood.

The interior of the battery powered XC40 also carries over the strong focus on sustainability from other variants, with the interior carpeting made entirely from recycled plastic.

RETHINKING INFOTAINMENT

The XC40 Recharge P8 is equipped with an infotainment system powered by the Android operating system. The infotainment system offers customers unprecedented personalisation, improved levels of intuitiveness and new embedded Google technology and services, such as the Google Assistant, Google Maps, and the Google Play Store.

It is also the first Volvo that receives larger software and operating system updates over the air, placing Volvo Cars at the forefront of automotive connected services. The XC40 Recharge P8 will keep evolving and improving over time, rather than being at its peak when it leaves the factory.

SAFETY AND DRIVER’S ASSISTANCE

While building on the excellent safety standards of the original XC40, Volvo Cars safety engineers had to completely redesign and reinforce the frontal structure of the XC40 Recharge P8 to deal with the absence of an engine, meet Volvo Cars’ high safety requirements and help keep occupants as safe as in any other Volvo.

The battery is protected by a safety cage which consists of a frame of extruded aluminium and has been embedded in the middle of the car’s body structure, creating a built-in crumple zone around it. The battery’s placement in the floor of the car also has the benefit of lowering the centre of gravity of the car, for better protection against roll-overs.

At the rear, the electric powertrain has been integrated in the body structure to realise a better distribution of collision forces away from the cabin.

The XC40 Recharge P8 is also the first Volvo model equipped with a new, scalable Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) sensor platform that consists of an array of radars, cameras, and ultrasonic sensors.

This platform enables the development and deployment of active safety systems in the car, such as the detection of other road users, automatic braking, and collision avoidance. It also allows for gentle driver support from standstill up to highway speeds, through the Pilot Assist function.
