This week in the European Parliament, MEPs voted on an agreement that will bring more transparency to the short-term accommodation rental sector. Ireland South MEP Deirdre Clune has welcomed this agreement, emphasising the need for comprehensive regulatory measures.
Currently, the lack of transparency in short-term rental operations makes it difficult for authorities to monitor and regulate these services effectively.
“The proposed measures include a simple online registration process for hosts, tighter security measures for online platforms to verify property details and prevent non-compliance, and improved data sharing to help authorities monitor rental activity and enforce regulations effectively,” Clune explained.
“This data will be used to compile statistics and allow public authorities to better assess the situation on the ground and, as a result, improve rental options and tourism services in their area. If needed, authorities will be able to impose penalties on rental servicers that do not meet European standards.”
She added: “This vote is a crucial first step in addressing the negative impacts of short-term rentals on local communities, and indeed, a small step closer to achieving decent and affordable housing for all. The agreement aims to promote a responsible and transparent platform economy in the EU.
“Now it is up to Member States, including Ireland, to establish clear planning rules and a national register (in line with EU law) that protect our tourism, address housing concerns, and support hosts,” Clune concluded.
