Major clean-up of Blackwater planned for New Year

Cork County Council are to conduct a major clean-up operation of the River Blackwater from Killavullen Bridge to Fermoy in the spring. This follows the successful clean-up between Mallow and Killavullen in 2014.

A motion requesting the clean-up was put to Cork County Council’s Northern Division this week by Cllr Frank O’Flynn. The work was originally scheduled to take place before the end of 2015, but was postponed due to the flooding of the river recently.

The work will be carried out under the auspices of Cork County Council, with staff provided under the Tús scheme organised by Avondhu Blackwater Partnership, with involvement from the Red Cross, the Civil Defence and Cork River Rescue.

“It was a great success last year and I’ve no doubt that it’s necessary between Killavullen and Fermoy,” said Cllr O’Flynn. “Quite a few people have contacted me looking for it, and I welcome the fact that it will be carried out in the spring.”
