On Thursday last, teachers from all over the country engaged in a one-day strike over the proposed Junior Cert reform.

Members of the teachers' unions had gone on strike before Christmas, hoping that the issues would have been resolved, but they took to the picket lines again on January 22 and are now considering a further strike day.

Teachers from the local schools in Fermoy, Mitchelstown, Doneraile, Mallow, Lismore and Kilfinane were among the 730 schools nationwide who went on strike, as they adhered to rotation systems, to ensure someone was there at all times.

The teachers are striking because of a number of issues at the heart of the proposed Junior Cert reform and these include having to correct a percentage of their own student's exam work for the Junior Cert, which they argue will lead to inequality.

Following on from the strike on Thursday last, Minister Jan O'Sullivan has now agreed to engage in fresh talks with the secondary school teachers' unions.
