The homes of two different residents in Tallow were broken into on Friday night while the owners were out attending a fundraising concert in the church.

It's angered a local businessman who says people, especially those on their own, are living in fear. "None of these break-ins are being solved. Those responsible are local, with local knowledge," he asserted. He'd spoken with one of the burglary victims over the weekend who was left terrified by the incident.

In March a public meeting was held in Tallow amid fears that the garda station there was to close after the opening hours were reduced. Assurances had been given that it wouldn't be closed. That meeting heard that Lismore was to be the base for gardai with two sergeants and 10 guards stationed there and that there would be a greater presence of patrol cars around the area. It was claimed at that meeting that there had been a big increase in crime, particularly burglaries, since the garda station in the town closed down at night.

The businessman who spoke with The Avondhu said there'd been break-ins to homes in the area 'on a regular basis for the past few months'.
