A rising young star within the ranks of point-to-pointing was honoured at a function held in The Winner's Enclosure, Conna last Friday night.
Following a very successful season, 21-year-old Johnny Hurley was presented with the Bill Twomey Memorial Trophy. The impressive trophy is awarded each year by members of the Cork & Waterford Injured Jockeys Committee. The committee was represented by Willie O'Neill (chairman) and Bill Ronayne (treasurer) along with proprietor of The Winner's Enclosure, Cal Moroney.
Willie said Johnny was a hard working and talented young jockey who had what it took to go to bigger and better things. Johnny, who was accompanied by his parents, Tommy and Anne and sister Jane, said it was a great honour to receive a trophy formerly won by the likes of Davy Russell. Last year's winner was Eoin O'Sullivan.
This is Johnny's fourth year riding in point-to-points and the highlight of the season involved wins in Knockanard and Dromohane (twice).

The Hurley family are very involved with the award winning Conna Harriers pack and Johnny regularly helps out with the feeding and exercising of the dogs. He is currently riding out for Jimmy Mangan (Conna) and Denis Ahern (Dungourney). He says he's lucky not to have any problems making weight and he hopes to continue picking up good rides for the 2016 season.
