Summer Garden Natural Skincare

Magdalena Szymkowska from Ballyhooly with some of her products from her business Summer Garden Natural Skincare.

Meet Magdalena, originally from a small village in Poland. Seventeen year resident in Ireland and now living in Ballyhooly, Co Cork. Mother of two young boys, a beauty therapist and masseuse by trade with an understanding of remedies for healthy skin.

After breaking her leg in 2020, Magdalena found herself out of action but not out of ideas. She began studying, learning and experimenting with soaping and making natural skincare. She fell in love.

“I made a calendula salve for my children and a facial oil for myself and my friends. My friends were delighted, my children’s skin was happy and healthy and my husband is my most honest soap tester!”

Experimenting and making continued from her home ‘lab’ – aka, her kitchen. “I made body butters and many types of soap. I experimented with different ingredients until I found what worked best. My friends were very happy with the many gifts of skincare and they always gave me honest feedback.”

Friends and family urged her to begin to sell her products. It didn’t take much convincing for Magdalena, mother and entrepreneur, to get the ball rolling.

Summer Garden Natural Skincare was born. Why this name? “I infuse my products with natural oils, lavender, rose geranium, chamomile and other fresh summer grown plant based oils. Choose Summer Garden Natural Skincare and take a stroll in a blooming summer garden!”

Over 20 products would follow. Luxurious aromatherapy candles, sweet smelling soap in many shapes and sizes, beautiful body butters, pampering body oil and rejuvenating facial oil all bloom from her Summer garden.

Summer Garden soaps are visually fun too. “I recently created a signature honey and goats milk summer soap with little flowers and buzzing bees decorating the soap. I grow and dry my own flowers to decorate my gift sets and add a personal touch to my creations.”

All Summer garden products are fully certified with Oxford Biosciences and are EU regulation compliant. “I research and source the highest quality and organic ingredients,” says Magdalena.

Encouraged by positive feedback from customers, Magdalena is sure she is on the right path.

“When I hear from a customer saying ‘I just got your candle in Kaala, it’s amazing’ or ‘my daughters skin looks so much better after the salve’. It really makes my day! When customers come back to buy more it’s a feeling I cannot even describe. It makes me feel that my little business is exactly what I am meant to do.”

Magdalena’s craft does not stop at skincare. “I love making things,” says Magdalena, “I also enjoy painting, sewing and of course, gardening.”

Visit Magdalena’s website where you can find a full range of her products. Aromatherapy Candles are available in Kaala22 in Fermoy.

You can meet Magdalena in person at Fermoy Farmers Market every second Saturday morning and she has a Showcase at Conna Horticultural, Cookery and Craft Show which takes place on 25th September.

“Throughout the Christmas season, I will be trading at local markets including Castlelyons, Fermoy and Ballyduff,” says Magdalena.

“I dream of opening a shop in the locality selling luxury natural skincare and handmade crafts. For now, I am looking at making this Christmas really special. Special edition artisan candles with shapes, colours and a sprinkle of magic will be available. I am bringing a little wow factor into my candles to make them really special.”

Customer wellness is at the heart of Summer Garden Natural Skincare. Magdalena wishes to extend a thanks to all of her customers.

“I remember my first day with a basket of my products at Fermoy Farmers Market and my joy at the interest that was shown in them. I hope for more people to take interest in natural products. Let’s aim for a future where handmade, not mass produced goods are at the top of our shopping list.”
