Local residents in Strawhall, Fermoy, are appalled at the escalating incidences of illegal dumping in their area. The culprits are showing a flagrant disregard for residents and indeed for the county council, with a large amount of rubbish dumped in recent days close to a sign which reads 'Cork County Council and local residents say 'no' to dumping.

Local councillors Noel McCarthy and Tadhg O'Donovan are calling on the environment section of the county council to fully investigate the matter and, if the culprit or culprits are identifed, to name and shame them. "It's the only deterrent" Cllr O'Donovan stressed.

The councillors were alerted by local residents sickened by these most recent incidences of fly tipping. Just six weeks ago they carried out a major cleanup after similar incidents. They believe the black sacks, containing beer cans, nappies and household refuse, are being tossed from a moving vehicle as the rubbish bags split, strewing the rubbish over a wide area.

Cllr McCarthy raised the matter with the county council's litter warden Stephen O'Sullivan and also alerted the county council's environment section at Inniscarra. One local resident described this week's dumping as "the worst I ever saw". Cllr McCarthy also brought it up at an area meeting of the county council on Wednesday afternoon, calling for CCTV to be installed along one quiet stretch of road at Strawhall which seems to be specifically targeted.

On Wednesday, when The Avondhu visited the area, there were six different lots of rubbish scattered along the roadside. Residents of the area who take great pride in their locality, were collecting up the rubbish themselves and disposing of it. They are however, fed up at this stage of continually cleaning up after people with apparently no social conscience or regard for the environment.

"It's terrible for them. It needs to be stopped," Cllr McCarthy said. Cllr O'Donovan agreed saying the environment section of the county council should now using every means possible to identify those responsible and impose the maximum fines on them.
