St Fanahan’s College, Mitchelstown Student Awards Ceremony 2013

A successful awards night at St Fanahan’s College, Mitchelstown saw Cork senior hurling star Conor Naughton address the attendance, as students were recognised for their academic and sporting achievements.

The annual St Fanahan’s College, Mitchelstown Student Awards Ceremony were held at the College on Thursday last, October 24th. Principal Colman Murphy extended a broad welcome to one and all, including parents, sponsors, award recipients and Conor Naughton, cork senior hurler, who gave the sporting achievement address on the night.

Acknowledging the success and achievements of those being honoured, Mr Murphy said: “Sometimes, we have all the words and phrases to be critical and negative when it comes to dealing with young people. This evening we celebrate all the positive actions and activities that our students are involved in. We acknowledge their academic achievements, sporting achievements, involvement in social and cultural activities. We as a school community say well done to our students, you are very good ambassadors for our school.”

AWARD WINNERS

Award winners on the night were as follows: 1st year student of the year Claudette Colbert; 2nd year student of the year Clara King; JCSP student of the year Mikey Peters; Best Junior Certificate results James Hackett and Nikkita Irwin; P.L. student of the year Corrinna Rath; LCA1 student of the year Sinead O’Mahony; Best LCA results Mary Meaney; Best Leaving Certificate result Emer McGrath; Principal’s award Ian O’Connor.

Following an address by Cork hurler, Cathal Naughton on sporting achievement, he presented the following recipients with their sporting awards: Sports male Eamonn Kelly; Sports female Danielle Hackett. Medals were then presented to the county football champions, with thanks expressed to Andrew Gorey for helping with the football team during the year. Panel members included Jack Corbett, Dylan Farrelly, John O’Grady, Killian Finn, Conor Coughlan, Jack Roche, Damien Curran, Jason Lane, Jack Norris (capt), Eamonn Kelly, James Hackett, Sean Keane, Stephen Roche, Josh Irwin, Jack O’Brien, Luke Jones, Dylan Aherne and Mathew Fitzsimons.

Special category awards were presented by Principal Colman Murphy, as follows: Music & drama award Sinead O’Mahony; Art award Rachana Gurung; Homework Club award Eoin Allen; School completion award Ria Burke and Eoin Coughlan; Achievement award recipients – Stephen Roche, Jack O’Donovan, Tiernan O’Brien, Benny Healy, James Hackett, Shania Williams, Vladimir Belujsky.

The school’s ‘Crossfire Racing’ team, who were successful in the F1 In Schools Competition, taking honours for both the ‘Fastest Car’ and ‘Best Engineered Car’ at the regional finals, were awarded for their efforts. As a result, they qualified for the national finals. The team consisted of Jack Norris, Rachel Connolly, Andrew Mackin, Clodagh Hyland and Conor Coughlan.

Awards were also presented to Jack O’Brien – Gradam na Gaeilge award; Rebecca Crowley C.I.T. award; while Andrew Gorey, Rebecca McGrath and Eoin Coughlan were presented with the science & business innovation award.

Concluding what was a great night for the College, Principal Colman Murphy thanked the various people involved in bringing the night together and wished all students well in their academic and sporting endeavours in the year ahead.
