Glanworth based architect, Neil Kane had a working weekend but it was all in a good cause. Neil, of Kane Architects, was taking part in the Simon Open Door 2013 initiative, which sees consultations by certified RIAI architects nationwide given in exchange for a €50 donation to the homeless charity.

Neil based himself in the lovely surroundings of the House of Franc in Glanworth for his consultations on Saturday. "It went very well, it was the busiest year ever for me and nationwide consultations were up 53% on last year," Neil, who has taken part in the fundraising event for the past six years, reported.

SERIOUS ENQUIRIES

Many of those who took advantage of the opportunity to get a professional hour-long consultation at such a keen price came prepared to take full advantage by having their questions prepared, Neil said. He felt a lot of those who sought the consultations this year were more serious in their plans to bring projects to fruition. Perhaps as a sign of these recessionary times, many of the queries had to do with building extensions rather than new builds.

After devoting his day on Saturday to his own locality, Neil travelled to the Clarion Hotel in Cork on Sunday where he had a second busy day. In common with other RIAI architects, Neil offered his time and expertise free so all of the €50  consultation fee per customer went to the Simon Community. Their open door initiative has been running annually since 2005.
