The spin-off benefit of the opening of Irish Distillers new whiskey maturation facility in Dungourney, has been felt in Fermoy, with locally based logistics company, South Coast, having landed the contract to transport the casks of whiskey.

The last time whiskey casks were transported by road was back in the mid '60s. The arrival of the first barrels of Jameson to the new warehousing facility in Dungourney in recent days was attended by much fanfare.

A local committee, the Distilling Welcoming Committee organised for the first consignment to be greeted by pipers as part of a welcoming celebration which drew large numbers of locals.

Irish Distillers invested  €100M in the warehousing facility and a further €100M in expanding their distillery in Midleton. Both were completed last year.

South Coast's contract with the distillery will see them draw the casks for a four year period. Founded in 1975, the family owned specialist logistics company serves a range of industries from the food to pharmaceutical sectors. Its headquarters are at Corrin, Fermoy.

Company Director, Richie O'Flynn, when contacted for comment this week told The Avondhu they are delighted to have Irish Distillers as a client. "We are very pleased to be associated with them," he said.
