Some roads stay at 80kph as new speed limits on the way

As local roads are soon to have a 60kph limit by default, a number of exceptions have been made in The Avondhu region and across county Cork. Roughly 30 exemptions to the default 60kph were agreed by members of Cork County Council on Monday this week, meaning that bye-laws will apply and the speed limit will stay at 80kph.

The new rules on local roads are to come into effect on 7th February next year, with a national public information campaign in advance. Other speed limit changes will come into effect from next June, said a spokesperson from the Department of Transport this week.

BYE-LAWS

The exemptions agreed by Cork County Council include parts of the road between Dungourney and Leary’s Cross near Castlelyons, and another section of road in the same area from the Two Pot Crossroads. Part of the ‘mountain road’ between Rathcormac and Ballyhooly will remain at 80kph, as will a section south of Killavullen towards Glenville. Likewise, part of the local road between Castletownroche and Doneraile will retain a speed limit of 80kph.
