A wandering budgie by the name of ‘Dora’ was doing the ‘rounds’, quite literally, in Watergrasshill, having escaped from her owner’s house. Dora went AWOL (Airbourne While On Liquor Lookout) having been let out of her cage by owner, Nora Curtin and the budgie was spotted in O’Neill’s The Hut Bar, before making her way across the road to The Fir Tree Inn, where a lady customer spotted her in the ladies toilets. She was safely reunited with her owner, but not before posing for The Avondhu photographer perched on a pint glass of stout!
A total prize fund of £5,000 was on offer in an innovative competition launched by Fermoy Enterprise Board, with Silver Pail on board as generous sponsors. The overall aim of the competition was to build an awareness of enterprise locally, to promote entrepreneurship and foster a positive attitude to it amongst schoolchildren and the general public. Chairman of the enterprise board, Michael Hanley, said the competition would help “source ideas for a business which can be implemented and will lead to increased economic activity in the Fermoy region.” The competition would have 2 specific categories: entries from the secondary schools in Fermoy - the winning pupil to receive £100 and their school receiving equipment to the value of £1,400. While the 18-35 year age category would see the winner receive a cash prize of £300 (runner-up £200), with £3,000 worth of financial aid to help in implementing their business idea.

Fermoy Soccer Club’s senior team continued their good run recording a good win over Midleton. The winning goal came with 15 minutes to go - substitute Ricky Ivory won a corner on the right and from Rory O’Connor’s set piece, a Noel O’Connor header was steered home by John Lawlor. A Wimmie Van Wiznen goal-line clearance in injury time ensured Fermoy took full points. Team: O’Hanlon, Gallagher, Van Wiznen, N O’Connor, McMahon, Keegan, R O’Connor, Twomey, Hegarty, Lawlor, O’Callaghan. Subs R Ivory, P Roche.
