To give something back to his customers after the doom and gloom of the Budget, Mark Waldron of Mark's Fruit and Veg in Mitchelstown is relaunching an offer which gives customers a 5kg bag of potatoes free with every purchase of fruit and vegetables of €10 or more.

Mark told The Avondhu, that it is thanks to David and Paul Flynn in Ballyhindon, Fermoy that he is able to relaunch this offer, as he had reduced it to just a 2kg bag of potatoes, in light of the cost of potatoes last year. The offer also coincides with the four year anniversary of the business and it will start today (Thursday).

David said he sees Mark's offer as an excellent opportunity for people to get a free sample of the excellent quality that is there in this year's crop. By doing this, he hopes people will come back and maybe buy the bigger bag.

David told The Avondhu that when he sets out to produce a crop of potatoes, his number one goal is to produce a potato with excellent flavour and texture, unlike the vast majority of large scale growers, who just want big yields and forget about quality.

"The potato was slightly forgotten about in the chaos of the Celtic Tiger years, with people seeing themselves as being too busy to cook, but now I feel it's time to get back to basics and produce artisan food at affordable prices," David said.

Talking about the saving that this offer represents, Mark said that an average family could save approximately €400 a year on potatoes, if they bought their fruit and vegetables weekly from him.

With many householders on reduced incomes, every little saving is to be welcomed and this is one which people will really notice in their weekly shopping budget.

While he has had many loyal customers since he first opened, Mark is urging people who have never gone into his shop to try it out and see the great quality and competitive pricing for themselves.

"If people are good enough to support me and give me their business, they will also be supporting the Flynn potato farmers in Fermoy. I now want to give people the best value I can and in the four years I've been open, the Flynn family and their high quality potatoes have been a big part of that success," Mark said.

He added that many people will go to a large supermarket for their weekly shopping, but they will specifically go to the butchers to get their meat and if they made the same choice about their fruit and vegetables, it would mean that another local business would be supported in these tough times.

"I would like to emphasise that I purchase my produce daily, unlike the multi nationals who would buy in stock much less frequently - so my products would have a better shelf life," Mark said.

"People would do well to find a better deal anywhere in the country, not to mind in Mitchelstown," he added.

He also thanked his customers over the past four years and said that he would love to welcome some new faces into his shop on Lower Cork Street and in hopefully doing so, they will be rewarded with a free 5kg bag of high quality local potatoes.
