The sight of skip bags – yellow, or white, or green large ‘mini skips’ – in the front lawns and yards of housing estates is becoming a common and unwelcome sight for many who live in urban areas and housing estates in the area. 

The bags can be bought from shops, garden centres, or directly from a waste management company, typically for a cost of just €10.

Collection starts at around €100, but is only payable when the bag is collected. No details are taken from the customer at the time of purchase, and no follow-up is conducted by the suppliers of the bags on where they end up.

A quick visual survey of most housing estates or built-up areas in Mitchelstown will reveal a skip bag in many front yards, as people take advantage of the extra time at home afforded them by lockdown to do a big clear-out of goods, or use the bags for dumping material from home upgrades.

One local resident in Fermoy, who did not wish to be named, contacted The Avondhu on the issue.
