Cllr Frank O'Flynn has called on Cork County Council to erect signs in Farahy, Kildorrery, to make people aware of the historical significance of the area.

Speaking at a meeting of the Fermoy Electoral Area Committee this week, Cllr O'Flynn said that the area is very famous and would have many visitors every year, but unfortunately, there is no sign to let people know when they are there.

Every year, there is a memorial service in tribute to the author Elizabeth Bowen (1899 - 1973) in St Colman's Church in Farahy. History and literary enthusiasts would also visit the site during the Trevor/Bowen Literary Festival.

The area has strong connections to the Bowen family and the graveyard is where the author and her husband were laid to their eternal rest, but there is also a famine grave there.

The graveyard is quite close to the former Bowenscourt Estate and the ruins of the author's ancestral home.

The issue of erecting signage will now be referred to the National Roads Design Office for consideration and comment.
