A money changing scam which was used on a number of occasions in shops in Fermoy last year has resurfaced in the town. A retail outlet in McCurtain Street was done out of a couple of hundred euro in the scam on Saturday last.
It operates by asking the sales assistant to exchange a number of twenty euro notes for fifty euro notes. Once the assistant obliges the person appears to change their mind and asks for the 20s back. In the ensuing confusion, the shop doesn’t receive back the full amount tendered.
Gardai say two people of Romanian origin are sought in connection with last Saturday’s incident. They are warning retailers not to exchange multiple notes for different denominations for anyone.
