A lesson in trees for Bishop Murphy pupils in Fermoy
Eleven students from Mitchelstown and Fermoy have excelled in maths and science and this weekend, they will all travel to Dublin to take part in an exam for the Science and Maths Olympiad award.
The students were chosen based on their Junior Certificate results and this Saturday, October 26, they will head to DCU to sit a Leaving Certificate standard exam.
There are two categories, for Junior and Irish European competitions and the top six students from the Junior category will go on to represent Ireland in India in December, while the process for the Irish European selection is a little more rigorous - medals will be awarded to nine students for gold, silver and bronze places. These medal winners will be invited to take part in practical training in January and after a further assessment, the top six students will be chosen to represent Ireland in Athens in March.
HIGH STANDARDS
Locally, there are three students from both the Presentation Secondary School and the CBS Secondary School in Mitchelstown and five studetns from Loreto Secondary School in Fermoy.
In order to qualify, the students had to get more than 95% in maths and science and achieve more than six A's in their Junior Certificate exams.
Ms Maher and Ms Dwyer teach maths and science to Gemma Kent (5th year), Ellen Clancy (TY) and Ciara Leonard (TY) in Presentation Secondary School, Mitchelstown and they said that this is a great achievement for the girls, who are all very hard workers.
Many of the students who have gotten through to the Olympiad would have an interest in pursuing a career which is maths, IT or science related.
The students travelling to DCU on Saturday include Gemma Kent, Ellen Clancy and Ciara Leonard from Presentation Secondary School in Mitchelstown, Shane Fox, Michael Lewis and Denis Murphy from CBS Secondary School in Mitchelstown and Fiona O'Flynn, Una O'Brien, Elaine Keane, Aine O'Brien and Elaine Culloty from Loreto Secondary School, Fermoy.
The three students from CBS Secondary were also recognised as high achievers in maths and have been invited to take part in the 2013 Irish Beaver Computing Contest, which is an online competition that aims to raise awareness about computer science in a fun and rewarding way - this takes place on the week starting November 11.
