The advice, traditionally, is "don't rock the boat", but at Conna Community Childcare last week, children were being actively encouraged to do just the opposite!

Room leader Alison Magee organised the 'Rock the Boat' event as a fundraiser for the planned new Down Syndrome Centre in Dublin. Thursday last was World Down Syndrome Day and the 'Rock the Boat' initiative was being performed all across the country to raise funds.

It had the full support and encouragement of the childcare facility's co-ordinator, Breda Byrne. Alison decided to organise the fundraiser as she had a relative with Down Syndrome who died earlier this year and because she feels it's a charity deserving of support generally for the good work it does.

She extended sincere thanks to Tom English of English's shop in Conna, Hurley's SuperValu in Midleton "and to our wonderful parents" for their sponsorship of the event and in providing the treats the children enjoyed as a reward for their endeavours in making sure the boat was well and truly rocked!

The children, who got into the spirit of things by dressing up as pirates for the occasion, were also presented with special bracelets to mark their participation.
