Residents of Ard Mhuillin Estate, Mitchelstown have spoken out against Cllr Kevin O’Keeffe’s efforts to install CCTV cameras in the area.
As reported recently in The Avondhu, Cllr O’Keeffe requested at a Cork County Council meeting of the Northern Committee that CCTV cameras be installed in the estate due to anti-social activity.
However, those living in the area have said that they feel this is an unnecessary course of action and fear that it may give their estate a bad reputation.
Resident Amanda Donegan told The Avondhu that the residents of Ard Mhuillin are very happy with their area and that installing a dog-proof fence around the children’s play area would be a much better way to spend the money.
“We look after ourselves here,” she said, as she described how following a tree in the estate being knocked down by a storm, she and other residents replanted it using equipment supplied by Kay Dawson and Jimmy Roche from Roche’s Cycles.
Amanda added that while one person did suggest that a camera be installed around the playground in the area, the location of the playground is in fact Ballinwillin, not Ard Mhuillin.
“Cllr O’Keeffe needs to understand the geography of the town before he represents the people in it,” she said.
The councillor responded by saying that if all of the residents feel that there is no need for the cameras, that is not a problem.
“I just put it up for discussion, and hopefully something good will come from it,” he said.
