A local group have raised over €13,000 for Breakthrough Cancer Research through their novel fundraising idea of traveling from Malin to Mizen Head by horse and carriage.

The event, which was organised by John McMahon from Kilbehenny and Dan Joe Spillane from Ballinagree, saw 20 people set off on the journey from Malin head on July 9th last. Eleven days and 469 miles later, the group finally arrived at Mizen Head.

The significant figure of €13,000 was collected on the journey through bucket collecting and the generous donations of residents from the towns which they passed through.

However, fundraising is ongoing and the group will be accepting donations until October.

John McMahon expressed his gratitude to everyone who helped make this ‘adventure’ so successful. “We would like to thank everyone who helped and contributed to making the event a success,” he told The Avondhu. “We are looking forward to another one next year.”

John and Dan Joe will also be taking part in another event on Sunday, 17th August as part of Kilbehenny Potato Festival, where they will be competing in a carriage-driving event with the ponies that took part in the Malin Head to Mizen Head journey.
