Remembering Pats Noonan, whose Month’s Mind occurs at this time

Fermoy Soccer Club recently mourned the sad passing of soccer legend Pats Noonan. Pats was well known in soccer circles, not only in Fermoy but further afield. He started playing soccer at an early age and even at that early stage it was plain for everyone to see that he had the makings of becoming a really great player.

Pats played his early soccer with Fermoy and made his debut in the Munster Senior League in 1946. He emigrated to England in 1948 and played with Wembley FC in London, who won back-to-back championships in their district league.

While in London, his displays in that league did not go unnoticed and when he returned home he signed for Evergreen who were making their debut in the League of Ireland. In his first game with them they defeated Cork Athletic 2-1 in a local derby, Pats scoring one of the goals and ‘Big’ Seanie McCarthy, another legend in Cork soccer, scoring the other.
