A Rathcormac man is in the running for the position of president of the world's largest health and safety professional body, the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).

Ciarán Delaney, who is originally from Beaumont, Blackrock in Cork is one of three people nominated to stand for election as president of the body which has 42,500 members worldwide, including some 1,700 in Ireland. The IOSH aims to create a safe and healthy working environment through campaigning and by supporting training.

Ciarán gained the bulk of his education through the Centre for Adult Continuing Education (CACE) at UCC, obtaining diplomas in Safety, Health and Welfare at Work and Environmental Science and Social Policy and a H.Dip in Learning Development and Work Based Training.

In fact Ciarán believes his experience could encourage others to pursue further education as a mature student through the likes of CACE at UCC or Springboard. He says the support of UCC academic staff and the faith they showed in him helped him to build up the self-belief to succeed.

To be nominated for president of the IOSH is "a huge honour" he says.
