Popular Cork rapper, GMC (aka Garry McCarthy) was in Fermoy recently for a workshop with Fermoy Youthreach students, as part of their poetry studies.

The rapper, whose track ‘Not Tonight (The Bouncer Song)’ peaked at 12th in the Irish singles charts in 2004, worked with the class as they produced a joint track entitled ‘Do What You Love’.

As part of their poetry studies in their English classes, GMC was on hand to introduce creative writing in a way that was exciting and relevant to them.

After performing his own raps for the students, he gave an introduction to rap/hip-hop and demonstrated beat-making technology. He then spoke about lyric writing/brainstorming techniques and encouraged the students to write their own lyrics.

Kelly Moller of Fermoy Youthreach said: “GMC took time with each of the students individually and gave them all an opportunity to record their own piece. These were then put together to make a joint track – ‘Do What You Love’.

“The event gave the students an opportunity to express themselves and to work together to record a finished track that they can keep to remind them of happy times at Youthreach,” she said.

The Youthreach programme seeks to provide early school leavers between the ages of 15 and 20, with the knowledge, skill and confidence required to participate fully in society and progress to further education, training and employment.

Fermoy Youthreach always welcomes applications from new students. Anyone interested should call 025-33633 to arrange an informal meeting.
