Proud Co Tipperary man and adopted son of Mitchelstown, the late Mick Meaney, is the subject of a book written by his daughter Mary.

The book, which will be launched on this Friday night in Mitchelstown, is entitled 'You Can't Eat Roses Mary' and tells of the man who dared to dream 'when dreams were not allowed'.

While there is some reference to Mick's underground feats (in a major feat of endurance, he was buried alive for 61 days in Kilburn, England in 1968 and among his many admirers was film star Diana Dors), the book is more about a daughter coming to terms with her father's complexities, understanding the man, his dreams and his demons.

Mary explains: "A daughter’s love for her father is tunnel–love, but in writing this book I have tried my best to be objective. This is not a history book. It is my dad’s story using my perspective of the truth. This book is about a daughter’s journey to understand her father and in doing so, learning more about herself in the process. I accept that I could be wrong in some aspects, because much of his story is buried with him. This is my telling of ‘Mick Meaney’ as seen through my eyes only."

This book is a true story about Mick Meaney, who had an unshakable dream to become a world famous boxer like his hero Joe Louis. But losing the tips of his fingers in a building site put an end to his boxing career. Mick Meaney still strove to be world famous. Now all he had was his faith in God, his Maker and ultimate belief in himself. He set about becoming a legend and writing himself into the history books.

In his time, Mick Meaney became a major celebrity who was featured by all the major television and news channels all over the world as well as being the subject of a number of documentaries.

Mary's book is keenly awaited and we extend our congratulations on her achievement.
