Protest ends as IP applicants move into Abbeyville

Following 125 days of protest action outside the front of the former Abbeyville B&B in the heart of Fermoy, the objectors have packed up their tent and vacated the area after 52 refugees and evacuees were moved into the building via the rear entrance last Thursday.

Gardaí provided assistance while the people were moving in to the building, blocking off a part of Rathealy Road in order to ensure a smooth passage; they were assisted by members of the public order unit. It is understood the refugees moved into the building without incident. However, there was clear frustration on the ground from those protesting, as witnessed by The Avondhu.

A garda source confirmed to The Avondhu that the protestors had removed themselves and the tent voluntarily from outside the premises on Abercromby Place on Saturday, but noted that an order from Cork County Council would have been forthcoming if they had not.
