Posthumous award for ‘exceptionally diligent’ Garda administrator

2022 marked the centenary of An Garda Siochana, with special medals being commissioned and framed citations awarded to all present and former members of the force, in addition to the civilian administrators who ensure the smooth running of stations.

Due to an oversight, the late Marianne Aherne, nee McCarthy, originally from Glenahulla wasn’t acknowledged – a fact local members of the North Cork Retired Garda Association were keen to remedy.

Not spotted until relatively recently, the association’s secretary, Joe Watkins, is credited with identifying the omission. Joe, along with many of his and Marianne’s colleagues, were in Aherne’s Bar, Kilworth on Tuesday evening this week to formally present Marianne’s family with her medal and certificate.
