You may not be able to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, but you can turn a littered and unsightly patch of land on the side of a hill into an amenity for the community. That's the plan for an area of land at the rear of St Colman's College, opposite Kevin Barry Hill car park in Fermoy.

FAS have recently finished clearing the way to allow the next phase of the development which will see tiered sections established and seating put in place. Fermoy Tidy Towns chairman Noel McCarthy and PRO Tadhg O'Donovan, paid tribute to John Feeney and his FAS crew for the work they did, which included clearing a number of trees from the site, cutting back undergrowth and cleaning up dumped rubbish.

The project is a joint initiative between the Tidy Towns group, FAS and Fermoy Town Council. They are pleased to have the co-operation of the school in undertaking the venture. Local landscape architect, John Doran has drawn up the plans to take the site from an overgrown and unsightly dumping ground and gathering spot for anti-social activity, to a pleasant amenity for the town.

Mayor Michael Hanley has a particular interest in the project and visited recently to see the site after it was cleared. He commended all involved.
