A speed detector radar unit is to be installed on the Pike Road in Fermoy in early 2015. Further speed limit repeater signs and additional ‘slow’ road markings are planned for the southern end of the road, these will be installed in mid-November. This was announced at the October meeting of Fermoy Municipal District council last week, following motions by Cllr June Murphy and Cllr Noel McCarthy.

Cllr Murphy asked the committee to make it their priority to upgrade the safety measures on the Pike Road, regarding enhanced signage, speed deterrents and lights. Cllr McCarthy requested that road markings be put in place on the Pike Road, so as to reduce the speed of traffic on the road by ‘designated contrasting colours with slow signage included to highlight the need for traffic to reduce speed’.

Senior Executive Engineer, Brendan O’Gorman, said a repeater 50km speed limit sign has already been installed at the northern end of the road, and that the road markings in place are adequate.

Cllr Murphy said she was delighted with this news, as are the residents, and that ‘it seems like that whole area is starting to blossom and rejuvenate again’.

Cllr McCarthy told the meeting of the amount of cars that travel the road and the speed they travel at, is unbelievable. He called for a greater Garda presence to monitor speed, and turning right signs to be installed. Over time, when funding is available, further lighting should also be considered on the road, he said.
