With planning permission granted this week by Cork County Council for the re-development of the former John McCarthy Motors site at Cork Road, Fermoy, it looks highly likely that petrol, which was selling on that site since just after war, will soon again be pumping there.

The Avondhu understands however, that an objection to the proposed plan is being considered by Cork County Council and may yet be an issue for An Bord Pleanala.

Sofa Properties Ltd which has connections with ESSO/SPAR and the H2 Group have exciting plans for a service station, convenience store and car wash facilities. The former 564sqm car-showroom which was used up until quite recently as a designer clearance outlet, will incorporate a 100sqm retail area and off-licence area, a café/deli/seating area, toilets, staff facilities and store.

It is expected that up to 50 jobs, made up of full time and part time positions, will be created. The development will in some way, mirror the town’s northern approach which is served by two service stations.
