Walking from Dublin to Cork is not something that many people would take on, but members of the Irish Disaster Response Team used their recent fundraising walk as a way to raise the profile of the group.

The group was set up in 2012 by Cobh man Padraig O’Keeffe and on their 600km walk from Marlay Park in Dublin to Dursey Head near the Beara Peninsula in Cork, they passed through a number of areas within the Avondhu region including Clogheen, the Mountain Barracks, Fermoy, Ballyhooly and Killavullen.

Padraig took on the walk with two other members of the group and three of their rescue dogs.

“We got a great response from all of the towns and villages we walked through,” the founder said.

Padraig set up the group, as he realised that there was a need for a dedicated Disaster Response Team, so that when a natural disaster strikes somewhere in the world, the Irish Government would be able to send a team out to help, rather than just sending funds as they do now.

The group is made up of 32 members from all around Cork and the rest of the country and the recent walk raised funds to go towards starting certification training in a programme supported by the United Nations Search and Rescue.
