Dutch national Ingrid van Steden, came to Ireland in 2009 - it was a big move for the Amsterdam native, but one she hasn't regretted.

Being away from family and not having much English and settling in to new surroundings wasn't all plain sailing. The late Bridget Sheehan was one of her first acquaintances and despite some linguistic challenges, a close friendship was struck up.

Bridget, the most traditional of rural women and her new exotic friend made for an unlikely alliance, however, they soon became a familiar sight in Conna, Ballynoe, Fermoy, Coolagown and Ballyduff.

Bridget had a wide circle of friends and she lost no time introducing Ingrid and coaching her in Irish ways. Ingrid gravitated towards Conna, where she was made especially welcome. Now resident in Monty's Meadow, a secure and comfortable housing complex in the heart of Conna village, Ingrid is very much 'one of their own'.

Her 70th birthday didn't go unmarked and on Saturday last, a party was held in her honour. Family, neighbours and friends turned out in strength for what was a lively, upbeat and feel-good occasion. Staff at Conna Social Centre did a brilliant job catering for the event and in typical Irish fashion, there was plenty food, drink and music. Eileen and Patsy Roche supplied the music.

For her part, Ingrid said the party was a wonderful occasion and a fitting celebration of her new life in Ireland. This sentiment was echoed by everyone present. Ingrid went on to express her deep gratitude to all those who helped make her 70th birthday so memorable.
