An uplifting evening of prayer, music and song took place in St Mary's Parish Church, Clogheen last Thursday to mark its 150th anniversary.

Parishioners were out in force to celebrate the key role played by St Mary's in the spiritual lives of people for the last century and a half. Clerical colleagues joined Fr Pat Butler, PP for the anniversary Mass which featured a number of visiting choirs.

Due in no small way to Fr Butler's enthusiasm, the Mass was an energetic and invigorating experience. The affable and outgoing cleric said there was never a better time for people to renew their faith. Thanking worshippers for their attention and attendance, Fr Butler urged them to embrace and live the Gospel.

Understanding that these were challenging times for the Church, Fr Butler said that the Mass and sacraments were a path to renewal. He went on thank the many individuals who devoted so much of their time looking after St Mary's - which was resplendent for the occasion. It was obvious that a tremendous amount of planning went into the event.

There was also a social dimension to proceedings with the congregation being invited to partake in an outdoor barbecue in the grounds of St Mary's following the anniversary Mass. On site catering was provided by Colin and Mericia Fitzgerald who run Tugela Foods - a company specialising in South African cuisine.

Fr Butler invited as many people as possible to stay for the 'breaking of bread' as the vast majority did. The wonderful weather, the candle lit exterior of the church and the interaction of attendees made for a truly memorable occasion and a fitting way to mark 150 years of St Mary's in Clogheen.
