Following some very bad news for the Ahern family, the people of Castlelyons and surrounding areas have come together and set up a fund to financially assist them.

13-year-old, Damian Ahern, a popular and outgoing student in St. Colman's College, Fermoy has been diagnosed with fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma, which in lay man's terms, is a very rare form of liver cancer - he has already undergone treatment in King's College, Hospital, London to remove the tumour and will undergo follow up treatment in Our Lady's Hospital in Dublin. Tragically for Damian, he also lost his mother in car accident.

Understandably, this series of events has put tremendous emotional and financial strain on Damian's family which includes a sister and his father, Damian Sr.

Under the chairmanship of Maureen O'Brien and secretary Chloe O'Brien, a committee has been formed with a view to organising a number of fundraisers. This committee is only recently up and running and they would welcome assistance. Maureen's mobile is 086-8111288, Chloe's number is 086-3528401.

NOT PREPARED TO STAND IDLY BY

By any stretch of the imagination the situation the Ahern family find themselves in is exceptionally serious and the people of Castlelyons have decided they shouldn't carry this burden alone. The response by individuals to date has been very encouraging and the intention is to commence fundraising in the weeks ahead. They are open to any fundraising ideas and would greatly appreciate any practical or financial support from the public.

The committee will be meeting on a regular basis from now on and The Avondhu will be keeping readers abreast of developments. Interested individuals shouldn't hesitate in contacting either Maureen or Chloe.
