Planning permission is being sought for what would be Mallow’s first set of padel courts.

Go Padel Ltd has put forward plans for the construction of five indoor padel courts at the local GAA complex on St Joseph’s Road in Carrigoon.

The proposed development would include a new building to house the courts, another to provide toilets and another to serve as a reception and store room for the facility.

The application is currently going through the validation process, with a decision expected by September 7.

The proposal comes as padel continues to grow in popularity across the country, with a number of new facilities being planned or developed locally.

There are already two courts available in Charleville and approved plans for courts in the coastal town of Youghal. Planning has also been recently granted for new padel courts at Ballyhass Lakes outside Mallow, while proposals have also been put forward for a court in Fermoy.

If approved, the local development would add another North Cork location to the fast-growing sport, which has seen more and more interest gather from players of all ages due to its accessibility and social appeal.
