There was much cause for celebration following the recent Special Olympics held in Limerick with a brace of winners coming from The Avondhu readership area.

Robbie Howard from Rathcormac took no less that four gold medals, one silver and one 6th place in Artistic Gymnastics.

The Bean Bag Lift and Short Bowling was Jamie McCarthy’s forte, taking no less than gold in each code. Jamie hails from Ballyporeen.

Fermoy swimming star, Emer Hayes, took to the podium with a gold, a silver and a 6th place while Nicola Dwyer of the Doneraile Rockets team secured a 7th place in 5-a-side soccer.

William Naughton from Galbally came away with silver in the long jump, a bronze in the 100 meters and he also took an award in the relay.

Patrick Buckley, Lismore can be delighted with his bronze medal and a 5th place in Bowling; Pat O’Connor from Watergrasshill took both gold and silver, also in Bowling while Tadhg O’Sullivan to bronze, two x 4th places and a 7th place in Artistic Gymnastics.

While we hail the winners, all who took part in the games are winners in their own right and we hail their courage and determination.

As the full list was not available to us at the time of going to press, The Avondhu apologises in advance should we have omitted anyone from our area.
