Opening of Mitchelstown Leisure Centre imminent

‘The building is completely finished, all the equipment is on order and any further delay in opening the Leisure Centre can be measured in days rather than weeks or months.’ – Ben Lynch

"The building is completely finished, all the equipment is on order and any further delay in opening the Leisure Centre can be measured in days rather than weeks or months," was the response to The Avondhu this week by Ben Lynch, chairman of the new facility, when concerns were put to him about the current status of the development.

"We had expected to be up and running from mid-August so we're rarin’ to go as soon as we are permitted to take over the building. We have a full programme of classes scheduled to commence, many of the more popular clubs in the area want to use the facilities and we’ve even had enquiries from businesses in Cork and Limerick to take space during the daytime. So, the sooner we open the better for everyone."

Ben went on to explain: "The only reason we haven’t been open for the past month concerns the delay in the release of the grant aid from the Dept of Environment which was approved over a year ago, ever before building work commenced. Ballyhoura Development, who arranged the grant on our behalf, are doing everything in their power to achieve an early resolution to the problem so that we can put it all behind us. In the meantime, we’ve come to an agreement with the builders, MMD Construction, to allow us to take over the building even before the outstanding payment due to them is received, and we’re currently finalising the paperwork on that agreement."

"We are aware that there have been some ill-founded rumours that there might be problems with the construction, but I can confirm there is no basis for them. In fact, our architects issued a Certificate of Practical Completion in late July confirming they are happy with the building and the workmanship, so any further comment is not necessary."
