To celebrate having won an award in the recent County Litter Challenge and the continued improvement in the Tidy Towns awards in 2014, Kilworth Village Renewal Group held a celebration in the Village Park on Saturday last where freshly pressed apple juice flowed like wine.

Kilworth continues its fight against litter and to this end, Cian O'Meara explains that having performed below average in the 2011, 2012 and 2013 competitions, the Kilworth committee introduced a new voluntary litter picking calendar in January 2014.

"We received funding for this scheme from the LA21 scheme, having submitted our plan in October the preceeding year. The calendar has allocated letters (of the family surname) to each week of the year, asking all in the locality to do some degree of litter picking in their allocated week. There are also public litter picking tools at 3 locations in the village. The effort has paid off and we received the award for 'best improver in Cork North, South and West and received a cheque for €400 which goes with the award."

So, to celebrate, there was a public picnic 'of sorts' in the village park on Saturday; cakes and tarts were brought along by some and members provided an apple press and a few boxes of apples. All hands chipped in to the production of wonderful local fresh apple juice which went down a treat. Kids and adults were intrigued to see how the real thing compares with the carton variety in the shops - the lack of leftovers said it all!

"We are finalising the project list for the coming year at our monthly meeting on this Thursday 18/09 at 8.00pm in Heaphy Grove Hall. If you would like to suggest or prime a project for the coming year, then please come along and throw in your tuppence worth. All welcome," Cian urged.
