Mitchelstown can happily celebrate an Olympics gold medal in their midst, as Olympian Conor Leahy, who won gold with Australia in the men’s track cycling team pursuit in Paris, has a close link to the town.
Conor is the son of the very proud Imelda Leahy, née Sheehan, a Mitchelstown lady who has been living in Australia for 28 years, and is the grandson of Elizabeth Sheehan. Joined by her husband Stephen, the duo are back at home for a holiday while their athletic son takes a break after six years of training to travel Croatia and further afield with his girlfriend, Zara.
Conor captured the gold with his teammates Oliver Bleddyn, Sam Welsford, and Kelland O’Brien on Wednesday last week at the Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines Velodrome in a nail-biting final battle against the sweetest of defeated opponents, the UK.
