Having a committee from the community set up to do a rota for closing the cemetery gates in Lismore seems to be the only likely solution to the problem of anti-social behaviour, members of Lismore Town Council were told at their monthly meeting on Monday night.

They were told by town manager Paul Daly, that the council doesn’t have the money to employ someone to do it.

Cllr Julie Landers has been pressing the issue over successive meetings, detailing the problem of drinking parties taking place there.

Cllr Davy Whelan asked Mayor Jan Rotte if he’d police the cemetery at 11 o’clock at night. Cllr Landers said that wasn’t what was being asked, the request was for someone to close the gates in the evening to stop people going in. Cllr Whelan said it would prevent cars from going in but it wouldn’t stop people from entering.

It was agreed to explore the community rota suggestion.
