The latest figures on new car sales released this week by car history experts, Motorcheck.ie, show the number of new cars registered in the first 10 days of 2015 has increased by more than 18% on the same period for 2014. This is despite the fact that 2014 was the best year for new car sales since 2008, with sales of more than 96,000 units.

Most commentators are predicting new car sales of between 105,000 and 115,000 units for 2015 and if the current positive trends continue, the industry can expect new car sales to reach the upper end of that spectrum. The new car sales stats summary for the first 10 days of January 2015, show sales of 11,400, compared to 9,653 for the same period last year. Toyota, Hyundai, Ford, Volkswagen and Nissan made up the top selling makes.

Interestingly, used cars imported into the country in the first 10 days of 2015 were down 16% for the same period in 2014.

Commenting on the figures, Michael Rochford, managing director of Motorcheck.ie said: “The numbers continue to remain very positive for the Irish Motor Trade. Annual new car sales should be well in excess of 100k units in order to sustain a healthy trade sector. It’s too early to draw any inferences from the decline in used cars being imported, but this is the first time we have seen this kind of trend in recent years. The used car market grew significantly in 2014 and with new car sales at current rates, it should ease the pressures on indigenous used stock by 2017”.
