A new application for a multi-million-motorway service station off the M8 near Fermoy has been lodged. The proposed location is near Junction 14 on the Cork-Dublin route, at Gortore, Moorepark West.

A similar application was made last year, however, despite being approved by Cork County Council last September, it was overturned by An Bord Pleanála earlier this year following six appeals.

The same company, JR Oronoco Ltd, have lodged the new plans, which includes a shop/restaurant building with drive through facility, forecourt and canopy, fuel facilities for heavy commercial vehicles, picnic and external seating/amenity area, footpaths, as well as amendments to the existing entrance serving the Teagasc facility at Moorepark.

At the time of the An Bord Pleanála refusal, a similar application was denied for Applegreen Service Area Ltd. The board inspector, Conor McGrath raised doubts over the granting of similar applications within close proximity. It was conceded however that there was a requirement for the development of a service station in the area.

A planning decision on the new application is due in early December.
