Many will be tuning into the Olympic Games in Paris later this month and one Nepali swimmer, with local connections, who has had to battle with poor facilities to perfect her skills, is likely to attract some attention.
Duana Lama, swimming for Nepal, whose mother Mary (nee Fanning) grew up in Castlehyde, Fermoy, was raised in Nepal but spent a lot of time in Ireland over the years and is very close to her Irish family. While in Fermoy, she trained with Jackie Power in the Fermoy Swimming Club and at age 13, she competed in the Irish National Swimming championships in Dublin, representing Fermoy, claiming two silver medals.
The athlete was recently named as one of just 7 representatives from Nepal for the upcoming Olympic Games and is one of just two swimmers selected.
