The staff of the Nano Nagle Centre in Killavullen have paid tribute to Sr Paula Buckley and Sr Imelda Carew, who died tragically in a swimming accident at Inch beach in County Kerry late last week.
Both had a strong connection to the Nano Nagle Centre. Sr Paula spent nine years working there and was well known in the local community and surrounding parishes. While Sr Imelda was involved in the Centre in her role as chairperson of the board of management up to last year.
A spokesperson for the Centre told The Avondhu: “Paula, particularly for us here in the local community and area, and Imelda, have been a source of inspiration and blessing to many people throughout their lives.
FAR REACHING
“Paula was involved in many and varied ministries. She began her teaching ministry at Presentation Secondary School in Cashel, but taught also in Dungarvan and Dublin. During this time she touched the lives of so many young people and indeed their families. Her influence was far reaching.
“She also served on leadership teams in the South East Province and for a number of years was an inspirational presence in the Nano Nagle Centre in Ballygriffin. Here she touched the lives of so many on so many different levels. More recently she was involved in prison ministry in Dubin, where again she brought her special presence of gentleness, calmness and understanding to both staff and prisoners. She indeed had a very special ability to reach out and touch lives.”
Sr Paula’s funeral Mass took place in Cashel on Tuesday, August 19th and she was buried in Ardmayle Cemetery, in her native county of Tipperary. Sr Imelda Carew was laid to rest in St Joseph’s Cemetery, Acragar, Mountmellick, Co Laoise.
