Traipsing through muddy trails and scaling challenging obstacles isn't something that everyone would sign up for, but for more than 1,000 people who took on D'hillbillies Mud Run in early November, it gave them the chance to be part of raising €16,000 for The Mercy University Hospital in Cork.

The cheque from the mud run on November 1, was handed over on Monday night, November 24th, as the CEO of the Mercy Hospital Foundation, Micheal Sheridan spoke about the difference the money would make to cancer patients, survivors and their families.

"We have a very strong support base in Cork City, so it's great to see support like this coming in from parts of the county," he said.

He added that the money raised will go towards their 2014-2017 strategy, as they are aiming to raise €1.1 million to convert an old building behind the hospital into a new cancer centre, which would give patients somewhere to go after their consultation. There would be a peer support programme put in place and hopefully a survivorship programme.

"It would be somewhere with information and support for patients and their families, giving them a safe environment to go to before they get into the car and drive home," he said.
