Jimmy Walsh makes a big impression on everyone he meets - a positive and lasting impression. An integral part of Mitchelstown Golf Club for several decades, there wasn't a dissenting voice when it was proposed that honorary membership be given to the man, affectionately known as 'Doyler' - and so it came to pass that gentleman Jimmy has been granted this rarest of accolades.

Family, friends, neighbours and golfing buddies past and present were in Mitchelstown Golf Club last Saturday night for the formalities that saw a portrait of Jimmy unveiled by the guest of honour and lady captain, Ita Luddy in the club house, this was followed by a special presentation by club president, Jerry Quinn - forsaking lampshades and pieces of crystal, organising committee members opted for a sturdy and professionally embroidered regal red chair - or 'a private throne' as it was described by some. Jimmy seemed delighted with this most practical of gifts.

"A mighty job all together' was how the man himself described the gift.

In his address, Jerry Quinn paid tribute to Jimmy's sporting prowess, his dedication to Mitchelstown Golf Club and the infectious enthusiasm that makes the 'Doyler' such a revered figure in golfing circles. Jerry went on to describe Jimmy as a mentor to young golfers, great company and a big hearted individual possessing that all important bit of devilment.

Club captain, Clem Leonard added his good wishes as did his life long friend, Sean O'Brien. Chairman of the Munster branch of the Golfers Unions of Ireland, John Moloughney said Jimmy Walsh's contribution to Irish golf had been immense and that an accolade of this kind was entirely fitting.

"Jimmy is known far and wide and he must rank as one of the greatest ever ambassadors for Mitchelstown Golf Club, I can only wish him long life and happiness" John remarked.

Responding Jimmy said he was 'humbled by such kinds words from people I am delighted to call my friends'. He thanked Jerry, Clem, Ita and all the committee for organising the function. Liam Gamble, Michael Nevin and Dave O'Donoghue all got a special mention. After his acceptance speech, Jimmy was soon back on stage for a rendition of 'Water Melon Wine' - the first of many musical contributions by a young at heart 85-year-old whose life has been enriched thanks to an enduring passion for the wonderful game of golf.
