Advertising feature – Christmas in Fermoy
Every Christmas, electricity bills rise dramatically, as the urge to light up the home and workplace with festive lights takes hold of people generally. However, this year, in a bid to do something different and help save energy, the students from Presentation Secondary school in Mitchelstown are promoting lightless Christmas trees.
The students from across all year groups have been working on colourful and festive Christmas trees, which are bright and fun, without sucking up loads of energy needlessly. They are also developing slogans with competitions to pick out the best trees and slogans, as the school work towards their Green Flag for energy conservation.
Green Schools coordinator, Maurin Lally, explained that they are also developing an app game, called 'Lights Out', to promote energy conservation awareness among people.
LOW ENERGY DAY
To tie in with the all of this, they will also have a low energy day this week on Friday, December 6, as the staff members together with the students will endeavour to avoid using things like photocopiers, fax machines and computers. It is their second year having a low energy day and it is a great way to get the whole school community, and not just the green schools community, involved in the effort for another Green Flag.
Ms Lally said that the committee members have worked really hard towards gaining this flag, really embracing the idea of energy conservation.
The school are hoping that after they are assessed, between now and January, that they might be erecting a third Green Flag some time in the near future.
