To avoid clashing with neighbouring parties and with a view to giving themselves 'a clear run', Araglin Ladies Club in association with their colleagues in Araglin Carnival Committee, pick an early date for the annual senior citizens party. One of the largest events in Araglin's social calendar, this party is looked forward to with a great sense of anticipation. Predominantly for locals, a few invitations are also sent outside the parish, which practically ensures a bumper crowd. The big day went ahead on Sunday, 24th November.

The 120 plus crowd were treated to a superb meal which was served by a group of very efficient volunteers. Following the meal, the traditional cake cutting ceremony took place with the area's most senior personnel in attendance to do the honours - the people in question this year were: Kit Cusack, Peg McGrath, Willie Conlon and Ned Brunnock - all of whom are in great fettle.

With the four course lunch out of the way, it was on to the dancing with Peter Lombard (Ballyhooly) and Mick Dunlea (Ballyporeen) entrusted with the task of entertaining. The two lads never fail to deliver and in no time at all the dance floor was full. Once again organisers commissioned Mike Lyons Sr. to officiate and he kept things ticking over nicely for the duration of the party.

During the course of the afternoon, Mary Fitzgerald (chairperson Araglin Ladies Club) thanked everyone who assisted with the planning and running of the party. Pa Browne (chairperson Araglin Carnival Committee) also addressed the crowd, in his address he acknowledged the hard work that goes into the day and paid tribute to all the helpers.

Special guests at the party were parish priest, Fr. Donal Leahy, who is a steadfast supporter of the party and Kilworth based Garda Denis Motherway, who has policing responsibility for a large section of the Araglin area. In his speech, Garda Motherway gave some sound advice on home security.

The 'regular' Santa also turned up complete with a brief case containing all his accessories. The man who fulfills this task every year is John Flynn from Toor in Ballyduff Upper. John, together with his late wife, Kathleen, have been wonderful supporters of events in Araglin over the years. A special word of thanks to Frankie O'Donovan who helped John with his Santa routine.

Putting their own unique slant on things, party organisers also include 'an evening snack' which takes the form of teas, sandwiches and cakes. After that it was more music and more dancing. All in all a great day out and another reminder of the ability of locals to organise such an elaborate function. Finally, a word of thanks to the hall committee for their role in hosting the party.
